Volleyball Skill Levels
What Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced mean in volleyball.
Read all three and pick the one that fits you best. If you match one level well and the next only partly, pick the lower one. A team at the right level is more fun than one where you're stretched.
You're probably a Beginner if you…
- Are new to volleyball, or returning after a long break
- Serve underhand, or get under 7 of 10 serves in
- Aim for three touches, but often just get the ball over
- Pass and set inconsistently, and can't yet direct the ball to a teammate
- Hit from a standing position rather than with an approach
- Know the basic rules but not the finer ones (lifts, doubles, net faults)
You're probably Intermediate if you…
- Have played at least a season or two of rec league
- Get 7 to 9 of 10 serves in, usually overhand
- Usually make three touches, and can bump or set the ball where you mean to most of the time
- Can spike with an approach, at least some of the time
- Rotate through positions, with the front-middle player usually setting
- Block now and then, and know the technical rules
You're probably Advanced if you…
- Played high school, club or university volleyball, or many seasons of competitive rec
- Can block, set, pass and hit with consistency, making few unforced errors
- Play an assigned position and know your job on serve receive and defence
- Know the common offences (5-1, 6-2, 4-2), and may run plays or back-row attacks
- Are comfortable with fast play and jump serves
