Soccer Skill Levels
What Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced mean in soccer.
Read all three and pick the one that fits you best. If you match one level well and the next only partly, pick the lower one. A team at the right level is more fun than one where you're stretched.
You're probably a Beginner if you…
- Are new to soccer, or haven't played since you were a kid
- Can pass over short distances, but find control under pressure hard
- Often have your first touch get away from you
- Are still learning offside, throw-ins and where to be on the field
- Prefer a relaxed, social pace
You're probably Intermediate if you…
- Have played rec, house league or co-ed soccer before
- Pass accurately over short and medium distances, and control most passes
- Sometimes beat a defender on the dribble, and put shots on target
- Know your position and the rules, including offside
- Can keep up with a moderately paced game for most of it
You're probably Advanced if you…
- Played high school, club, university or provincial-level soccer
- Control and pass cleanly with either foot, even under pressure
- Read the game: spacing, marking and making runs
- Are comfortable at a fast pace for a full game
- Play several positions, or a specialist one such as keeper, well
