Ultimate Skill Levels
What Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced mean in ultimate.
Read all three and pick the one that fits you best. If you match one level well and the next only partly, pick the lower one. A team at the right level is more fun than one where you're stretched.
You're probably a Beginner if you…
- Are new to ultimate, or have only thrown a disc casually
- Throw a backhand over short distances, and find the forehand hard
- Drop some catches, especially in wind or on the run
- Are still learning the rules: no running with the disc, the stall count, and making your own calls
- Run after the disc rather than to open space
You're probably Intermediate if you…
- Have played a season or more of league ultimate
- Throw backhand and forehand accurately over short and medium distances
- Catch reliably, and know when to cut and when to clear space
- Know the rules and make calls calmly, in the spirit of the game
- Play person-to-person defence and can mark a thrower
You're probably Advanced if you…
- Played university, club or competitive league ultimate
- Throw accurately past a mark, including long hucks and break throws
- Know common offences (vertical and horizontal stack) and defences (zone, forcing a side)
- Make hard cuts for a full game
- Help organize your team's line and strategy on the field
