Badminton Skill Levels
What Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced mean in badminton.
Read all three and pick the one that fits you best. If you match one level well and the next only partly, pick the lower one. A team at the right level is more fun than one where you're stretched.
You're probably a Beginner if you…
- Are new to badminton, or have only played casually in a backyard or gym class
- Serve and keep short rallies going
- Hit clears that don't always reach the back of the court
- Mostly use your forehand
- Are still learning scoring, service rules and the singles and doubles lines
You're probably Intermediate if you…
- Have played regularly for a year or more, at a club, drop-in or league
- Play the main shots with control: clear, drop, drive, smash and net shot
- Use both low and flick serves in doubles
- Have a backhand you can rely on for defence
- Know where to stand in doubles, and rotate between attack and defence with a partner
You're probably Advanced if you…
- Play in competitions, or have been coached for several years
- Hit full-court clears, steep smashes and tight net shots consistently
- Disguise shots and change pace to move your opponents
- Get to all four corners in time with efficient footwork
- Play clears and drops from your backhand side at the back of the court
